In what has been referred to as “the worst kept wrestling in wrestling”, rumours of Christian’s return to the WWE has been all over the internet since the end of last year when it was leaked that Christian had opted out of renewing his contract with rival company, TNA. Although the company tried to keep an opening for any possible eventual return, it soon came clear that it was not to be. If Dixie Carter’s interview with The Daily Star didn’t confirm it then last night’s ECW taping did.
Surprise Return
Christian made his ‘surprise’ return to a raucous crowd ovation, interrupting current ECW Champion, Jack Swagger as he was cutting a promo on his current rivalry with Finlay. He made it perfectly clear that his eyes were set on the title belt before hitting the current champion with a microphone. ECW’s general manager, Teddy Long, then put the irate Swagger in a match, which thanks to interference by both Finlay and Hornswoggle, Christian was able to win. The non-title victory surely putting him in contention for a title shot.
While it has been widely reported that Christian was set to make his return to the WWE, exactly how this was to transpire has been the real mystery. Many reports had alluded to Christian’s involvement in the Jeff Hardy storyline currently playing out on Smackdown. Matt Hardy was recently revealed to be his attacker. It was thought by many that Christian would be the one to be revealed in this position, propelling him into the main event spotlight on one of the WWE’s main shows. However, as seen on last night’s ECW taping, this isn’t the case.
Christian on ECW
ECW is seen by many as the WWE’s ‘C’ brand and considering Christian’s position in TNA, it will be interesting to see how Christian feels about his position in the company. Internet sources report that it is likely he has been told that he is to be the show’s ‘top guy’. Nevertheless, as Mike Mooneyham previously reported in his column for The Post and Courier, Christian hoped to make an immediate impact and find himself in the main event spot.
While ECW is seen as the ‘C’ brand, it is also the starting level for stars to move up from, perhaps after a few months we will see Christian moved to the Smackdown or even Raw brand. It is known that Christian has support on both brands, especially in the form of Edge, his on-screen brother and ex-tag team partner who currently holds the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
Christian’s return debut can be seen on ECW at 11pm on Sky Sports 3 in the UK.
